Plywood vs MDF in Bangalore's Climate: What to Use Where

Bangalore is kinder to furniture than coastal cities, but the monsoon still delivers months of sustained humidity, and a slow leak under a kitchen sink is a matter of when, not if. Board choice is the decision that determines whether your carpentry lasts five years or fifteen.

Why MDF fails in a kitchen

MDF is wood fibre and resin compressed into a board. It takes paint and routing beautifully, which is why it is popular for shutters. But once water reaches the core it swells irreversibly — there is no drying it out. In a Bangalore kitchen, under a sink, that is a question of time. It also holds screws poorly, so hinges loosen under repeated load.

Where MDF is genuinely fine

Decorative wall panelling in a dry living room or bedroom, headboard panels, and routed shutter faces where the carcass behind is plywood. Used correctly it is a good material; used as a kitchen carcass it is a false economy.

How to check what you are actually getting

Ask for the board brand and grade named in the quotation, not "BWR equivalent"
BWP boards carry an IS:710 marking; BWR carries IS:303
Look at the edge of a sample — plywood shows distinct veneer layers, MDF is uniform brown
Ask to see the invoice for boards delivered to your site if you have doubts

Not for the carcass. It can work as a routed shutter face where the box behind it is plywood, provided edges are properly sealed. As a base unit carcass under a sink in Bangalore, it will fail.

Where is MDF actually a good choice? +

Decorative wall panelling, headboard panels and routed shutter faces in dry areas. It takes paint and profiling far better than plywood, so used in the right place it is genuinely the better material.

How do I verify the plywood grade used in my project? +

Ask for brand and grade named in the quotation rather than vague wording like 'BWR equivalent'. Look for IS:710 or IS:303 markings on the boards, check the edge for distinct veneer layers, and ask to see delivery invoices.

Is particle board ever acceptable? +

We do not use it. It has very poor moisture resistance and screw-holding, and in a humid climate it is the cheapest possible board for a reason. If a quote is unusually low, this is often why.

What is HDF-HMR and when do you use it? +

High-density fibreboard with high moisture resistance. It gives a flatter surface than plywood, which suits shutters and flat panels, but its screw-holding is weaker so we do not use it for load-bearing carcass.

Does board choice affect the warranty? +

Yes. Our written warranty on modular work assumes the specification in your quotation. Using appropriate board grades is what makes that warranty meaningful rather than decorative.
